Take a leaf from our book: five fun autumn activities with your dog

Although summer is gone, there are still many ways to brighten up your day! Here are five fun activities to join in with your furry best friend:

1. A day at the beach

Yes, the winds are chilly and the water is colder, but that means the beach will be less populated! Perfect time, right?

Not only that, but as summer comes to an end, the beaches all around the country open up to people and their dogs again. There's nothing your furry friend would like more than to stretch their legs running along a sandy beach while chasing seagulls. Don’t forget to bring plenty of fresh drinking water with you; the last thing you want is for your pooch to drink any sea-water which would end up making them very sick.

2. Tramp through the bush

The New Zealand bush is a beautiful place to explore as the weather cools down. The great thing about tramping through these areas with your pooch is you can let them off their leads in certain areas, and this means they get to follow their noses as they track down new scents.

If your dog is still learning the ropes, however, or does not have good recall, you may need to keep them on their leads so you don’t lose them!

3. Have a fun run!

Do you like running? What about your dog? Find out if there are any fun runs that allow people to take their dogs with them scheduled to take place this autumn. It's a great day out and one that your pooch will enjoy as much as you. Not only that, but you get to meet like-minded dog loving people.

Just make sure to pace yourself and keep things nice and steady so you don't tire your dog out too much. If you think your dog looks a bit weary, however, there's no shame in stopping before you reach the end of the run. Afterall, your four legged friend's well-being has to come first!

4. Don’t turn into a pumpkin - have some!

Did you know that canned pumpkin is actually healthy for dogs and a good addition to their diet? Since pumpkin is high in fiber and water, it can even be used for dogs suffering from lower digestive problems. Add a spoonful to your dog’s dinner for a special autumn treat.

5. Amazing autumn photoshoot

The colours and lights are different - so why not embrace the change with a new “look”? And what better backdrop to take photos of your best friend than in front of a beautiful bright colored pile of leaves? Especially when the leaves change from green to yellow, red, and orange!

Start by raking up a pile of leaves and playing with your dog in it. Once they start jumping around, grab your cell phone or camera and snap away! Before you know it, the kids will be jumping around with your dog in the leaves and you can turn this into a quick family photoshoot.

Just because the temperature drops doesn't mean you need to stay indoors; there are heaps of things you can do with your canine companion that will create some great memories of the time you spend together!

What are some of your favourite autumn activities? Did we miss any that you love to do with your furry friend? If you have any suggestions or if you have any questions, please give us a bell in store on 09 448 2227 and we can help you out.
