When it comes to sharing the beach with people and their pets, it’s good to keep some doggie etiquette rules in mind.
Here are some tips for keeping beach trips fun for everyone.
1. Check out the rules
Do dogs have to be on a leash? Are they only allowed on certain areas of the beach? It’s always best to read up on the rules before you and your pup head to the beach.
2. Keep an eye on your dog
Dogs can get exuberant once they’re off their leash. But dogs running up to people and bowling them over is no fun for anyone. Always keep an eye on your dog when they’re off their leash.
3. Keep a leash on things
When you’re passing another dog on a leash, it’s best to always leash your own dog. The other dog may be leashed for a reason, like being old or easily spooked, so your friendly dog jumping on them might not go down well.
4. Pick up poo
Doggy doo doo left on the beach carries a whopping $400 fine. Some dog parks provide poop bags, but its best to always carry your own in case there aren’t any available.
5. Don’t ruin the wildlife
Beaches have their own ecosystems which need to be respected. Make sure your dog doesn’t dig up nests or chase birds ‒ this can cause more damage to the natural habitat than you might realise.
Once you have some ground rules underway, your trip the beach with your pup in tow will be so much more fun.
